Great post, Ian. Daniel Burka talked quite a bit about this last year at the AIM Conference. He told a, likely apocryphal, story about a university in the states (MIT?) that left the whole area around the campus grass for the first year, to see where people would be walking, and then built in the paths.

He likened this to the way Digg's UX has been designed -- in pieces, in iterations, making sure that where the permanent paths are made suits the users' needs.

Thanks for the love, friends! We had fun.

Jeff, yeah, looking back some actual screen casting would have been a good idea. Definitely can do it even better next time. Thanks for the tips!

Great job, guys - looking forward to more of these!

Hey, don't forget that Snow Leopard has video screen capture build into QuickTime X, so you don't have to use a camera (or can use it for a 2-shot for cutting).

Anyway, lovin it.

It's all about user experience. Having used both a (modern) BlackBerry and an Android device for a long period of time, I can safely say that neither come close to the "pick me up and use me" narrative that exists around the iPhone. The fact that that exists is why there's the app ecosystem.

An HTC phone with Android may at least have a chance at converting someone (althought probably not through an ad), but I still think iPhone is safe for now. Hardware and UI aside even, it's still all about the apps.
